- Existential psychotherapy: An international survey of the key authors and texts influencing practicePublication . Correia, Edgar Agrela; Cooper, Mick; Berdondini, LuciaExistential psychotherapy is one of the longestestablished forms of psychological intervention, but the scope and nature of the intervention remains unclear. To deepen an understanding of the nature of existential psychotherapy, an international survey was conducted of existential practitioners, asking them to identify the authors and texts that had most influenced their practice. Responses were received from practitioners in 48 different countries, with 1,085 identifying the authors that had most influenced their practice, and 853 identifying the most influential texts. The six authors identified as most influential were Frankl (16.6 %), Yalom (15.5 %), Spinelli (10.6 %), van Deurzen (10.0 %), La¨ngle (8.7 %), and May (5.9 %). The first four authors were also responsible for the six most influential texts: Man’s search for meaning (Frankl, 9.4 %), Existential psychotherapy (Yalom, 9.2 %), Practising existential psychotherapy (Spinelli, 3.5 %), The doctor and the soul (Frankl, 3.5 %), Everyday mysteries (van Deurzen, 3.4 %), and Existential Counselling & Psychotherapy in Practice (van Deurzen, 3.2 %). These findings help to develop a greater understanding of the theoretical and practical influences on existential psychotherapy today.
- Patterns of psychotherapy development: A mixed-method analysis using assimilation indicesPublication . Neto, David Dias; Baptista, Telmo Mourinho; Dent-Brown, KimUnderstanding how assimilation develops is essential in promoting personal change. By attending to signs or indices of assimilation in the speech of clients, therapists can use this process to assess how the therapy is developing and to tailor intervention. The system of assimilation indices was developed to use assimilation to understand the process of change. This system signals five sub-processes of assimilation: external distress, pain, noticing, decentring, and action. This study consisted of a longitudinal mixed-method analysis, following a multiple cases embedded design. The system of assimilation indices was applied to the recordings of nine psychotherapies and contrasted with both the outcome of the therapy and the perspectives of the therapists and clients about their therapy process. The results show that the system of indices is useful in understanding multiple pathways for assimilation. The system of indices is seen as a useful tool for understanding assimilation and as having clinical value in anticipating challenges to the success of the therapy. This study also shows how the indices are sensitive to the nuances in the change process observed in clinical settings.
- Development and validation of a system of assimilation indices: A mixed method approach to understand change in psychotherapyPublication . Neto, David Dias; Baptista, Telmo Mourinho; Brown, Kim DentAssimilation is an important process in understanding change in psychotherapy. Similar to other psychological processes, assimilation may be traceable in the speech of clients by attending to its signs or indices. In the present research, we aimed to build a system of indices of assimilation.
- Strategically moving forward in combatting homelessness in SpainPublication . Baptista, IsabelThe first National Comprehensive Homelessness Strategy 2015- 2020, adopted by the Spanish government in November 2015, is an innovative policy reform developed with wide political consensus at the national level. With an overall aim of overcoming the lack of integrated policies in tackling homelessness, the Strategy envisions the eradication of homelessness as its ‘final horizon’ under the leadership of the public sector. This paper discusses relevant EU dynamics leading to the growing adoption of holistic approaches to homelessness, focussing on the development of Spanish policy and providing comparative snapshots with the path followed by the first southern European homelessness strategy. It explores key drivers behind the adoption of the Spanish National Comprehensive Strategy on Homelessness as well as its contents and underlying principles, and it discusses the Strategy’s potential to deliver on its promises.
- Improving research and learning in higher education in portugal: Digital resources, e-books, and a discovery system as enabling factors for studentsPublication . Sanches, TatianaThis article describes a library’s implementation of digital resources for research, teaching, and learning at a higher education institution in Portugal. A school specializing in education and teacher education established strategic performance areas related to digital resources for the fulfillment of its mission, which included some functions of the academic library. The library implemented a discovery system, and the school invested in a wider range of resources, including e-books, both acquired and institutionally published. The library’s training programs were also revised to promote the new system and electronic resources. This case study describes how an academic library in Portugal responded to institutional needs, illustrating how libraries everywhere must connect to the larger vision and demonstrate value through technologies, integrating digital and print resources to provide access built around users’ needs.
- The effects of combat exposure, abusive violence, and sense of coherence on PTSD and depression in Portuguese colonial war veteransPublication . Ferrajão, Paulo Correia; Oliveira, Rui Aragão GomesWe analyzed the effects of 3 war components-combat exposure (CES), observation of abusive violence (OBS), and participation in abusive violence (PARTC)-and sense of coherence (SOC) on the development of both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among a sample of war veterans. We also analyzed the role of SOC as a mediator of the effects of CES, OBS, and PARTC on both depression and PTSD symptoms. Sample was composed of 120 Portuguese Colonial War veterans. A binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of these variables on depression and PTSD diagnosis. Mediation test was performed by conducting several hierarchical regression analyses. Results showed that OBS and PARTC, and lower levels of SOC were associated with increased odds for exceeding the clinical cutoff scores for diagnosis of depression. All variables were associated with increased odds for exceeding the clinical cutoff scores for diagnosis of PTSD. In mediation analysis, at first step, PARTC was not a significant predictor of both PTSD and depression symptoms, and PARTC did not enter in subsequent analysis. SOC was a full mediator of the effects of OBS and CES on both depression and PTSD symptoms. We propose that treatment of war veterans should aim the reconciliation of traumatic incongruent experiences in veterans' personal schemas to strengthen veterans' sense of coherence, especially for those exposed to acts of abusive violence.
- The practices of existential psychotherapists: Development and application of an observational gridPublication . Correia, Edgar Agrela; Sartóris, Vítor; Fernandes, Tiago; Cooper, Mick; Berdondini, Lucia; Sousa, Daniel Cunha Monteiro de; Pires, Branca Sá; Fonseca, João daWithin the major therapeutic paradigms, observational instruments have been developed to assess orientation-specific interventions or processes. However, to date, no such instrument exists to assess existential practices. Recent research indicates the key practices of existential therapists, and forms an empirical basis on which to develop an observatory grid. This paper describes the development of such a grid, and its exploratory testing with eight clients of four Portuguese existential psychotherapists. A total of 32 sessions were observed and both speaking turn and whole-session analysis showed that it was feasible to assess existential therapy using the instrument, although psychometric findings recommend further refinement of the tool. Session-rating data suggest that the chief practices applied by existential therapists were relational, followed by the use of hermeneutic interventions and reformulations. Interventions based on phenomenological and existential assumptions were observable in practice but limited in frequency. Further refinements and developments of the observational grid, together with additional research – using a range of therapists from different schools of existential therapy – are recommended.
- Effects of socio-demographic variables on performance on the Cambridge neuropsychological automated tests for the assessment of dementia and Portuguese norms for older adults living in retirement homesPublication . Gonçalves, Marta; Pinho, Maria Salome; Simões, M. R.This study aimed to analyze the effects of age, education, gender, computer experience, institutionalization time, and psychotropic drug use on performance on four tests of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) which are recommended for the assessment of dementia (Rapid Visual Information Processing [RVP], Paired Associates Learning [PAL], Spatial Working Memory [SWM], and Reaction Time [RTI]), and to provide norms for Portuguese older persons without neuropsychiatric diagnoses who are living in retirement homes.
- Process and outcome research in existential psychotherapyPublication . Alegria, Sofia; Carvalho, Inês; Sousa, Daniel Cunha Monteiro de; Correia, Edgar Agrela; Fonseca, João; Pires, Branca Sá; Fernandes, SandraThis study aims to be a contribution to both process and outcome research regarding existential psychotherapy having used, respectively, Psychotherapy Process Q-Set and Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation – Outcome Measurements. Four dyads in a total of 48 sessions were analysed. Results reflect upon the primacy of the therapeutic relationship
