- Oldenburg Burnout Inventory – Student version: Cultural adaptation and validation into portuguesePublication . Campos, Juliana Alvares Duarte Bonini; Carlotto, Mary Sandra; Maroco, JoãoThe Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for college students (OLBI-S) was adapted to Brazilian Portuguese and its reliability and validity were measured in a sample of both Brazilian (n=958) and Portuguese (n=602) college students. The confirmatory factor analysis of the OLBI-S showed good fit but two items were removed since they lacked individual reliability (λ<.50). The new structure showed good fit to 2/3 of the test sample and was invariant to the other 1/3 of the total sample. Convergent validity and internal consistency were low, but discriminant, concurrent and divergent validity were good. The OLBI-S was not invariant in the Brazilian and Portuguese samples. The adapted OLBI-S did not show cross-cultural validity. Keywords: Burnout, college students, evaluation, Psychometrics.
- Prevalence and predictors of Burnout Syndrome among public elementary school teachersPublication . Carlotto, Mary Sandra; Câmara, Sheila GonçalvesAbstract: Burnout is a psychosocial phenomenon, expression of several crises and disorientation in society, which has been subjecting the many labor sectors to too much tension over the years. The teaching profession is exposed, in the current work context, to a large amount of psychosocial stressors that, if persistent, may lead to Burnout. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify the prevalence and the predictors of the Burnout Syndrome (BS) in a random sample of 679 Brazilian teachers from 37 public elementary schools. The instruments were the Spanish Burnout Inventory; the Battery of Psychosocial Risk Assessment; and a questionnaire to assess sociodemographic and occupational variables. There was 7.5% prevalence of Profile 1 SB, and 18.3% of Profile 2 SB. Results point as predictors of Burnout dimensions the variables autonomy, conflict role, ambiguity role, overload, social support, and interpersonal conflicts. Results point predictor models of burnout dimensions composed of psychosocial risks derived from the type of the activity, and of interpersonal risks, with highlight to the variables social support and overload, which are present in all of the dimensions. Suggestions for further studies and implications on the practice are approached.
- Testing the indirect effects of personality traits on the relationship between work overload and technostressPublication . Carlotto, Mary Sandra; Vieira, Lia Severo; Wendt, Guilherme WelterAbstract: The widespread adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) resulted in a new form of work culture in which boundaries are not clearly established. Technostress – a phenomenon partially caused by excessive technology exposure and usage – is being associated with a myriad of negative effects. However, individual differences, such as personality traits, might influence one’s experience of stress when using ICT. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the indirect effects of personality traits on the relationship between work overload and technostress. A sample of 213 ICT Brazilian workers (Mage=35.53±9.41; 64.8% males) provided information on demographic and labor-related data, as well as measurements of Technostress, Work Overload, and Personality Traits;moreover, based on a coefficient of determination (ρ2=.12), the power achieved was 99%. Adjusted for multiple comparisons, results pointed to moderate, significant links between Fatigue and Neuroticism (ρ=.32), Fatigue and Work Overload (ρ=.37), Anxiety and Work Overload (ρ=.33). Moreover, Conscientiousness exerted an indirect effect on the relationship between Work Overload and the Technostress dimension of Fatigue (95%CI: .001, .06). The study highlights the role of individual differences that might prevent workers’ experiences of technostress, particularly Fatigue.
- The mediating role of burnout syndrome between regulatory focus/motivation and intention to leave in teachersPublication . Carlotto, Mary Sandra; Gonçalves, Sónia P.; Geremias, Rosa Lutete; Câmara, S. G.Abstract: Teachers are exposed to various occupational stressors which, if persistent, can lead to Burnout Syndrome and to recurrent thoughts of leaving the profession and culminate in total withdrawal. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the mediating role of Burnout Syndrome between the two dimensions motivational system that is constituted by the regulatory system with a focus on prevention and promotion and the Intention to Leave the profession among teachers in Southern Brazil. A total of 781 elementary school teachers from public and private schools participated in the research. The research instruments used included the Burnout Syndrome Questionnaire, the Regulatory Focus Scale, and a single item to evaluate the Intention to Leave the profession. The results obtained by Structural Equation Modeling confirmed the hypothesis that Burnout Syndrome plays a mediating role between promotion regulatory focus and the Intention to Leave the profession. The results reveal the importance of interventions that contemplate the reduction of occupational stressors for the prevention or rehabilitation of Burnout Syndrome in teachers.
