  • Conflict (Work-Family and Family-Work) and task performance: The role of well-being in this relationship

    Recent societal changes have brought new challenges to contemporary organisations, e.g., how to properly manage the work-family/family-work dyad and, thus, promote adequate task performance. This paper aimed to study the relationship between conflict (work-family and familywork) and task performance, and whether this relationship was moderated by well-being. Thus, the following hypotheses were formulated: (1) conflict (work-family and family-work) is negatively associated with task performance; (2) conflict (work-family and family-work) is negatively associated with well-being; (3) well-being is positively associated with task performance; and (4) well-being moderates the relationship between conflict (work-family and family-work) and task performance. A total of 596 subjects participated in this study, all employed in Portuguese organisations. The results underlined that only family-work conflict was negatively and significantly associated with task performance. Work-family conflict established a negative and significant relationship with well-being. Well-being was positively and significantly associated with performance and moderated the relationship between conflict (work-family and family-work) and task performance. These results show that organisations should provide employees with situations that promote their wellbeing, especially in Portugal, where a relationship culture exists (rather than task culture, which is predominant in the USA and Canada, for example) which means that additional and considerable time must be dedicated to personal and family matters for people to fit in and be accepted harmoniously.
  • Is There Evidence of Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED) in remission of active disease in children and adults? A Systematic Review

    Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease. Previous research has explored the impact of diet on CD, as specific dietary components can influence gut microbiota and immune responses, contributing to damage in the gastrointestinal tract. The Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED) is based on an exclusion diet; it is a recent dietary approach that is often used alongside partial enteral nutrition (PEN) and aims to induce disease remission by excluding certain dietary components. This study assesses the current evidence for the effectiveness of the CDED + PEN in achieving remission in both children and adults with active CD. Our systematic review followed PRISMA recommendations and was registered in PROSPERO with CRD number 42022335076. The searched databases were PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science. The included studies were analyzed using Rayyan software, and the risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane RevMan 5.0 software. The primary assessed outcome was clinical remission, evaluated with validated questionnaire scores such as PCDAI, CDAI, or HBI. All analyzed papers yielded promising results. Notably, the CDED + PEN demonstrated better tolerance than exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN), resulting in higher adherence rates. Therefore, the CDED + PEN appears to be a viable alternative for induction remission in active disease for both children and adults with CD.
  • Measuring sustainability: A validation study of a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Scale in Portugal

    Studies on sustainability using the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach are increasing. However, there is no consensus on how to measure the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability based on TBL theory. Despite numerous proposals, there is a lack of integrated measures covering all three dimensions simultaneously and having a human-centered approach. This gap is particularly pronounced in Portugal, where no existing scale adequately meets the needs of academics and practitioners. To address this challenge, and based on existing measures that encompass the nature of each TBL dimension, we present and validate a 15-item TBL scale, with 5 items per dimension: economic, social, and environmental. To test convergent validity and contribute to the discussion regarding the links between TBL and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), we also analyzed the association between each TBL dimension and each CSR dimension. Using a sample of 635 participants, divided into two independent sub-samples, we conducted comprehensive statistical analyses, including exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, reliability testing, and convergent and discriminant analysis, followed by invariance testing of the TBL scale. The results suggest that the proposed measure fits the Portuguese sample, and all psychometric results are robust. We also establish the links between the three dimensions of TBL— economic, social, and environmental—and the CSR dimensions, as convergent validity is verified between social TBL and employees' CSR practices. We discuss theoretical and practical implications, as well as limitations and suggestions for future research.
  • Students’ motivation for a sustainable career in the hospitality industry in Portugal

    Based on the intersection between Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 “Quality Education” and SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, the main purpose of this study, framed by the self-determination theory, was to identify the relationship between the factors that motivate students to pursue a career in the hospitality and tourism industry and their commitment to the university and to their program, guaranteeing a more sustainable career. Methodologically, a survey was used to assess students’ perceptions about their commitment to conclude their BA academic program and their time at university, and to identify the types of motivation to pursue a future career in hospitality and tourism. The study took place, with the participation of 305 students, in one of the leading Portugal universities in hospitality and tourism. By leveraging the structural equation modelling technique, we tested how extrinsic and intrinsic motivations for a career in the hospitality and tourism industry contribute to the commitment to the program and the university. Results suggested that students’ commitment to remain in the university and their commitment to conclude their BA program are mainly associated with introjected motivation. This study highlights the need to study higher education systems to boost sustainable human resources management, mainly creating bridges between education systems and industry to allow individuals to have more sustainable careers.
  • Pro-environmental messages in job advertisements and the intentions to apply—The mediating role of organizational Attractiveness

    : Environmental sustainability is a concept with increasing importance in the way organizations think and outline their cultures, practices, and business strategies to become more attractive. In this sense, the present study aims to understand whether organizations that publish job advertisements regarding sustainable culture and ecological concerns are perceived as more attractive and generate higher intentions to apply. A quantitative study was made with a sample comprising 443 participants. The results suggested that job advertisements with pro-environmental messages generate a higher organizational attractiveness. In addition, organizational attractiveness does not mediate the relationship between the type of advertisement (green vs. non-green) and intentions to apply. Additionally, the results suggested that individuals with greater individual environmental responsibility and intentions of pro-environmental behavior have a greater intention to apply, facing green job advertisements. The role of organizations in adopting green practices to attract and retain the best talent is also discussed, as well as suggestions for future studies.
  • Competencies development: The role of organizational commitment and the perception of employability

    The main objective of this study was to analyze the mediating effect of perceived employability (internal and external) and the organizational commitment in the relationship between the organizational practices of competencies development (OPCD) and the turnover intentions. The sample consists of 2099 participants, all of them working in organizations based in Portuguese territory. The existence of a significant and negative effect of the OPCD, of perceived internal employability and the organizational commitment in the turnover intentions, has been proven. There was also a significant and positive effect of perceived external employability on turnover intentions. Finally, the serial mediating effect of perceived employability and organizational commitment in the relationship between OPCD and turnover intentions was proven.
  • Green human resources practices and person-organization fit: The moderating role of the personal environmental Commitment

    Based on the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN), where 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are identified, the present study aims to (1) propose a measure for the perception of green human resources management practices; (2) investigate its relationship with the employees’ personorganization fit, and (3) analyze the moderating role of personal environmental commitment in the relationship between the perception of green human resources management practices and employees’ person-organization fit. A quantitative and hypothetical-deductive approach was used, and a sample of 204 Portuguese employees responded to an online questionnaire. The results showed (1) that the proposed measure for the perception of green HR practices was adapted to the Portuguese population and showed excellent internal consistency; (2) a significant and positive relationship between perceived green HR practices and person-organization fit; and (3) that this relationship can be moderated by high personal environmental commitment. The study presents novelty and contributes to the existing literature concerning green HR practices by proposing an adapted measure, relating it to person-organization fit, and verifying the moderated role of personal environmental commitment. Thus, the effective implementation of green HRM practices is highlighted to promote positive consequences in the organization and the employees.
  • Occupational stress and turnover intentions in employees of the Portuguese tax and customs authority: Mediating effect of burnout and moderating effect of motivation

    Abstract: The main objective of this study was to study the effect of occupational stress on turnover intentions, as well as determine whether this relationship is mediated by burnout levels and moderated by motivation. The sample size of this study consisted of 603 participants, all employees of the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority, which is part of the Ministry of Finance and belongs to the Direct State Administration. The results indicate that occupational stress (with managers, career and pay, and overwork) has a positive and significant effect on turnover intentions and that this relationship is mediated by burnout. Motivation (intrinsic and identified) has a negative and significant effect on turnover intentions. Intrinsic motivation moderates the relationship between occupational stress (with managers, colleagues, career and pay, and family problems) and turnover intentions. These results indicate that among the dimensions of occupational stress, the most critical are the stress caused by managers, work overload, and career and pay. These are factors that the Direct State Administration should be concerned with to reduce employees’ stress levels, as well as their turnover intentions.
  • Dietary acid load and relationship with albuminuria and glomerular filtration rate in iIndividuals with chronic kidney Disease at Predialysis State

    : The Western diet, characterized by excessive consumption of animal protein and reduced intake of vegetables and fruits, is also rich in sulfur, chlorine, and organic acids, which are the main sources of dietary acid load. A relationship between dietary acid load, renal function, and progression of chronic kidney disease has been demonstrated. Dietary modifications seem to contribute to a reduction in dietary acid load, and are associated with improved outcomes in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this paper was to review the existing evidence concerning the association between dietary acid load and renal function in nondialyzed individuals with CKD. A systematic review was conducted by gathering articles in electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) from January 2018 to May 2021. Dietary acid load and GFR and/or albuminuria were analyzed. A total of 1078 articles were extracted, of which 5 met the inclusion criteria. Only one study found no statistically significant associations between the study variables. The remaining showed a negative association between dietary acid load and renal function. This systematic review confirmed the existence of an association between dietary acid load and renal function, with a high dietary acid load contributing to a decreased renal function.
  • Burnout and suicidal behaviours in health professionals in Portugal: The moderating effect of self-esteem

    The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of burnout on suicidal behaviours and the mediating effect of self-esteem in this relationship. A total of 1172 healthcare professionals working in Portugal’s private and public sector organisations participated in this study. The results indicate a high level of burnout among these professionals and that exhaustion (β = 0.16; p < 0.001) and disengagement (β = 0.24; p < 0.001) positively and significantly affect suicidal behaviours. In turn, self-esteem has a significant and negative effect (β = −0.51; p < 0.001) on suicidal behaviours. Self-esteem moderates the relationship between disengagement and suicidal behaviours (B = −0.12; p < 0.001) and the relationship between exhaustion and suicidal behaviours (B = −0.11; p < 0.001), representing an essential variable for future lines of research, namely on the role of self-esteem in preventing burnout and suicidal behaviours in professionals from other professional areas.
