- Dream recall frequency and content in patients with temporal lobe epilepsyPublication . Bentes, Carla; Costa, João; Peralta, Rita; Pires, Joana; Sousa, Paula; Paiva, TeresaPurpose: To evaluate morning dream recall frequency and content in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Methods: Fifty-two patients with pharmacoresistant TLE submitted to a written dream diary during five consecutive days and continuous video–electroencephalographic (video-EEG) monitoring. A matched control group of 41 healthy subjects completed the same diary at home. The number of recalled dreams (including long dreams) and nonrecalled dream mentation were collected, and the Dream Recall Rate (DRR) was calculated. Hall and Van de Castle dream content analysis was performed. Key Findings: Greater than 70% of patients with TLE (37 of 52) recall their dreams, but DRR rate in these patients is lower than in controls (p £ 0.001). Dream recall does not appear to be influenced by the presence of neuropsychological deficits nor seizure frequency. In dreams descriptions, TLE patients (vs. controls) have a higher percentage of familiarity in settings and fewer dreams with at least one success. Significance: Onirical activity of patients with TLE is different from that of healthy subjects. Our results support the role of mesial and neocortical temporal structures in dream experience. The selective activation of dysfunctional mesial structures may be responsible for some of the observed variability. However, dream content changes can also mirror social and psychological comorbidities of patients with epilepsy.
- Ecological model explaining the psychosocial adaptation to COVID-19Publication . Gaspar, Tania; Paiva, Teresa; Matos, M. G.: The main objective of this study is to understand and characterize the adoption of an ecological perspective and the physical, psychological, social, and contextual health factors that may influence the adjustment to and mental health experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study included 5479 participants, of which 3710 were female (67.7%), aged between 18 and 90 years old, with a mean age of 48.57 years (SD = 14.29), were considered three age groups: 21.5% up to 35 years old, 61.8% between 36 and 64 years old, and 16.7% 65 years old or more. The mental health and individual adjustment to the COVID-19 situation are explained by socio-demographic factors, health-related factors, lifestyles, attitudes and behaviors, lockdown experience, and place of residence. A better adaptation and mental health are observed among men, people with a higher educational level, people with lower sadness, nervousness, and burnout, and people whose health situation did not worsen with the pandemic. In terms of lifestyle, a better adaptation is related to a better quality of sleep, fewer nightmares, a higher practice of physical activity, and less consumption of processed foods and sweets. A better adaptation is also associated with lower levels of dependence on alcohol, TV, and SN (social networks) and a more positive experience of the lockdown imposed by the pandemic. Gender and age group differences in the described context were studied. Promoting a better adjustment and improved mental health when dealing with the COVID-19 requires an ecological understanding and multitarget interventions, targeting physical, mental, and social health together with the contextual environment.
- Hábitos de sono e ansiedade, depressão e stresse: Que relação?Publication .
- Psychometric Properties of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory in a Portuguese Sample of Aircraft Maintenance TechniciansPublication . Reis, Cátia; Tecedeiro, Miguel; Pellegrino, Pollyana; Paiva, Teresa; Maroco, JoãoFrom its initial conceptualization as emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal efficacy for the help professions, burnout has received increasing attention in modern times, especially after the 2019 WHO’s inclusion of this syndrome in the ICD-11 list. Burnout can be measured using several psychometric instruments that range in dimensionality, number of items, copyrighted, and free use formats. Here, we report the psychometric properties of data gathered with the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) in a sample of Portuguese Aircraft maintenance technicians. As far as we know, this is the first study addressing the burnout syndrome in this occupational group. Data gathered with the OLBI displayed good evidence of validity related to internal structure, to other variables, with good evidence of reliability. We showed that burnout significantly correlated with mental and physical fatigue emphasizing the vital critical role that these variables play with safety in the aviation industry.
- Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the Jenkins Sleep Scale in a sample of Portuguese shift workersPublication . Reis, Cátia; Mestre, Catarina; Tecedeiro, Miguel Moreira Vaz; Paiva, TeresaThe aim of this work was to translate the Jenkins Sleep Scale into Portuguese, to culturally adapt it to the Portuguese culture and to assess its stability, internal consistency and convergent validity among a group of shift workers (airline pilots). The scale was validated in a sample of 456 airline pilots. The original Jenkins Sleep Scale was translated and culturally adapted to the Portuguese Culture using recommended procedures. The psychometric methods used were confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modeling, Cronbach’s α coefficients, and intra-class correlation coefficients. The results confirmed the JSS-PT has a single factor model, like the original version, with the Comparative Fit Index and the Tucker- Lewis Index suggesting a very good fit. Cronbach’s α coefficient was .84 for the extracted factor. Pearson bivariate correlations were performed on 75 participants, with an interval of 1 week for testretest purposes with intra-class correlation of .99. Convergent validation showed significant correlations (r=.57). The validity and reliability of this scale was established, enabling it to be used within the Portuguese language speakers. Nevertheless, this study should be replicated in other samples, with other forms of validity being explored.
- Uso terapêutico do «biofeedback» do E.M.G. do músculo frontal em cefaleias de tensãoPublication . Paiva, Teresa; Nunes, J. Silveira; Teixeira, Jorge; Moreira, Ana; Pargana, OlgaEight patients with tension headache were treated with biofeedback of frontalis E.M.G., four in a true and four in a false condition. Results showed that true biofeedback is more effective than false in lawering frontalis muscle tenson; however, both conditions reduced headache indexes which shows the lack of relationship between muscle tension and clinical simptoms. Other implications are discussed.
