- Adjustment of brood size and androgen levels in a teleost species with exclusive male parental carePublication . Ros, Albert F. H.; Fagundes, Teresa; Oliveira, Rui FilipeIn maximizing reproductive success, individuals face a trade-off between parental care for their current offspring and investing in androgen-dependent sexual traits to produce further offspring. It has thus been proposed that parental effort would suppress androgen levels. Here, we studied parental effort by manipulating brood size in the peacock blenny, Salaria pavo, a littoral fish species in which males show long periods of paternal care.We focused on the effects of brood size on female spawning rate (measured as number of eggs received in the nest by focal males) and androgen levels. We found a positive linear relationship between brood size and the number of eggs received subsequently. Accordingly, spawning rate increased for males with experimentally enlarged broods while it decreased for males in which brood size was reduced. However, over a longer time interval, brood sizes of both treatments returned to the nonmanipulated brood size, suggesting an effect of additional factors such as male quality. Brood size did not show the expected negative relationship with levels of testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone. On the contrary, testosterone levels were positively correlated with brood size. However, in agreement with the prediction, changes in the level of parental care by manipulation of brood size showed an inverse relationship with testosterone levels. As with brood size, given time, testosterone levels tended to return to nonmanipulated levels. Such changes suggest that males adjust their brood size to an individual value through androgen modulation of courtship or other traits influencing female spawning rate.
- Birth date predicts alternative life-history pathways in a fish with sequential reproductive tacticsPublication . In species with plastic expression of alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), individuals of the same sex, usually males, can adopt different reproductive tactics depending on factors such as body size. 2. The ‘birth date hypothesis’ proposes that condition-dependent expression of ARTs may ultimately depend on birth date, because individuals born at different times of the year may achieve different sizes and express different reproductive tactics accordingly. However, this has rarely been tested. 3. Here, we tested this hypothesis in a fish with ARTs, the peacock blenny (Salaria pavo). A long-term (6 years) mark–recapture study demonstrated that ARTs in the peacock blenny were sequential and that males may follow at least two alternative life-history pathways: a nestholder pathway, in which males express the nest-holder tactic from their first breeding season onwards, and a parasitic pathway, where males reproduce on their first breeding season as sneaker males and subsequently as nest-holders. 4. We have found evidence of a birth date effect on the expression of ARTs in the peacock blenny. Males following the nest-holder pathway are born earlier and are larger at the first breeding season than males following the parasitic pathway, but they have similar growth curves. 5. The mechanisms underlying a birth date effect are far from clear and might be diverse. We have not found support for a mechanism of body size threshold triggering sexual maturation and subsequent ARTs. A mechanism of tactic determination that is strictly based on timing of first maturation is also unlikely. 6. A proxy of lifetime reproductive success shows crossing (body size associated) fitness curves for the two main life-history pathways.
- Bourgeois males of the peacock blenny, Salaria pavo, discriminate female mimics from females?Publication . Gonçalves, David; Matos, Ricardo Jorge S.C.; Fagundes, Teresa; Oliveira, Rui FilipeIn a Portuguese population of Salaria pavo, two types of reproductively active males occur: large bourgeois males that defend nests and have fully developed secondary sex characters (SSC) and small sneaker males that mimic the females morphology and behaviour to approach nests and parasitize fertilizations. These two alternative reproductive tactics are sequential, as sneakers develop into bourgeois males. We investigated whether bourgeois males were able to discriminate between sneakers and females of different sizes. In a laboratory experiment bourgeois males were sequentially presented with a female and a sneaker matched for size. Complementary field observations were conducted on the interactions between females and sneakers with bourgeois males. If bourgeois males discriminated females from sneakers, we predicted that they should direct more aggressive behaviours towards sneakers and more courtship acts towards females. In general, bourgeois males courted and attacked small females and sneakers equally. However, large sneakers were courted less and attacked more than large females. Larger sneakers, beginning to develop SSC, were attacked more and courted less by the bourgeois male than smaller sneakers, and larger females were attacked less and courted more than smaller females. These results strongly suggest that only small female-mimicking males were able to deceive bourgeois males. In S. pavo, if the sneakers fertilization success correlates with their female-mimicking ability, a fitness decrease with an increasing body size can be predicted.
- Female mate choice and mate search tactics in a sex role reversed population of the peacock blenny Salaria pavo (Risso, 1810)Publication . Fagundes, Teresa; Gonçalves, David; Oliveira, Rui FilipeBehavioural observations were carried out on a sex role reversed population of the blenny Salaria pavo to investigate possible mate choice behaviour of the females. Females mated with relatively larger males, with a larger head crest, anal gland and genital papilla, which had more eggs in their nests and that courted the female. Thus, these male traits were potentially assessed by females when choosing their mates. In order to mate, females visited one to four males (eight females spawned with the first male they had visited and eight visited more than one male). The majority of the females spawned with the last male visited but three of them returned to mate with males visited previously (two with the penultimate visited male). Additionally, the outcome of the first visit of each female depended on the quality of the males: males that were accepted on this first visit had larger head crest than rejected males. Therefore, the mate searching model that best fitted the data was a threshold tactic that allowed the searching individual to return to any potential mate visited before, i.e. that allowed for complete recall. Moreover, three females returned to mate with males rejected earlier during the search, which indicates that they lowered their thresholds. These results suggest that females use a ‘one step decision’ tactic to search for mates. In this tactic, females mate with males that satisfy an adjustable threshold criterion, balancing the quality of the mates expected to find in the next step of the search and the effort of finding them.

J.; Fagundes, Teresa; Oliveira, Rui FilipeIn an investigation of the relationship between reproductive success and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in the peacock blenny Salaria pavo, FA was measured in four bilaterally paired characters in successful and unsuccessful males during the breeding season. Reproductive success among successful males was assessed by calculating the number of eggs the males were defending. Absolute FA values relative to trait size were high for all characters and it is suggested that this could be a consequence of sub-optimal environmental conditions. Two of the traits presented higher absolute FA values suggesting a lower canalization during ontogeny. No difference in FA between successful and unsuccessful males was found and no relationship between FA and number of eggs among the successful males occurred for any of the measured traits. A composite index of FA, that should better reflect overall developmental competence, was also unrelated to reproductive success. These results indicate that FA is not associated with reproductive success among males of S. pavo. Successful males were larger than unsuccessful males and a strong positive correlation was detected between the body length of the parental males and the number of eggs they had in the nest, even when controlling for the internal nest area. Body size may give males a reproductive advantage by being preferred by females and by having an advantage in male-male competition for nests of higher quality.
- Reproductive behaviour of sneaker males of the peacock blennyPublication . Gonçalves, David; Fagundes, Teresa; Oliveira, Rui FilipeIn the peacock blenny Salaria pavo small sneaker males tried to steal ‘fertilizations’ at most in two different nests of large nesting males throughout the breeding season and spent most of their time associated with a particular nest. Sneakers did not associate with ripe females. As nesting males were the limiting reproductive resource in this population due to the scarcity of appropriate nest sites, sneakers were likely to maximize their chances of achieving parasitic fertilization of eggs by associating with successful nests.
- Social cues in the expression of sequential alternative reproductive tactics in young males of the peacock blenny, Salaria pavoPublication . Fagundes, Teresa; Simões, Mariana G.; Gonçalves, David; Oliveira, Rui FilipePhenotypic change in response to variation in environmental cues has been widely documented in fish. Transitions in social dominance, in particular, have been shown to induce a rapid switch in reproductive phenotypes in many species. However, this effect has been mainly studied in adults and focused on behavioural transitions. The way social cues constraint the phenotypic development of juveniles remains poorly studied in fish. We tested the importance of social dominance and density in the phenotypic development of juveniles of the peacock blenny Salaria pavo. This species shows sequential male alternative reproductive tactics. In the first breeding season males can reproduce as nest-holders or as parasitic males (female-mimicking), or postpone reproduction; from the following season afterwards all males reproduce as nest-holders. Parasitic males have relatively larger testes that lack a testicular gland, present in the testes of nest-holders. The testicular gland is the main source of androgens in the testes and accordingly nest-holders have higher circulating androgen levels. In addition, exogenous androgen administration to parasitic males promotes the development of secondary sexual characters (SSC) only present in nest-holders such as a head crest and an anal gland. We raised juveniles under a high or low-density treatment and monitored social interactions for 1 month. No significant effect of density on the development of juvenile males was detected. However, within each replicate, the relative body size of juvenile males at the beginning of the experiment determined their dominance status, with dominant males developing towards the nest-holder morphotype. Dominant males engaged in more nest defence behaviour, showed larger testicular glands, had higher levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T) and developed more SSC, as compared to subordinate males. However, these effects of social dominance were moderated by body condition as only dominant males in good body condition developed SSC. The effect of social dominance and of the area of the testicular gland on the development of SSC was mediated by 11-KT and on the expression of nest defence behaviour by T. Interestingly, in spite of the higher androgen levels and more pronounced morphologic development of SSC in dominant individuals, gonadal development was independent of social dominance and most fish still had underdeveloped testis at the end of the experiment. In conclusion, social dominance promoted the development of the testicular gland, an increase in circulating androgen levels and the development of SSC, but did not promote testicular development. This suggests a dissociation of mechanisms underlying sexual maturation and the expression of male reproductive traits. This dissociation seems to be the key for the occurrence of female-mimicking males in this species, which are sexually mature despite lacking the SSC typical of nest-holders.
