ABSTRACT: This study aims to verify the factprs that are related to the learning of statistics in 11th grade. 165 students, in 11th grade, participated in this study, aged between 16 and 20 years, three high scools in the Lisbon region.
The instruments used for data collection are: "Me and Statistics" that resulted from an adpatation of the scale "Me and Math" Mata, Monteiro and Peixoto (2007, the scale "Lessons in Statistic" that resulted from an adpatation of the scale "Lessons in Mathematics" Mata, Monteiro and Peixoto (2008), and in order to be able to acess student performance statistics, we used an instrument of the research project Knowledge retention and capacity to communicate statisticaly. The variables to be studied are: Motivation of students; Gender; Perception of competence; Attitude toward statistics; climate classroom and school performance in statistics. The main results of this study show that, with regard to motivation, this is significantly related to performance. We found also that the perception of competence, value, choice and pressure are also strongly related, unlike pleasure where that there was not necessarily linked to a positive performance. We can say that positive attitudes are associated with a positive performance, as well as social support from teachers and peers and cooperative learning, unlike the competitive and individualistic learning. Comparing motivation by gender, we found that girls show higher values than boys.
