- Adaptation of nussbaum's capabilities framework to community mental health: A consumer-based capabilities measurePublication . Sacchetto, Beatrice; Ornelas, José; Calheiros, Maria Manuela; Shinn, MarybethThe capabilities approach provides a rich evaluative framework to guide transformative change in the community mental health system. This study reports the content and construct validity and psychometric properties of a contextualized measure of the extent to which mental health programs foster achieved capabilities. The Achieved Capabilities Questionnaire for Community Mental Health (ACQ-CMH), adapted from Nussbaum's capabilities framework, was developed previously with consumer collaboration. Content validity was assessed through a collaborative process, involving a panel of eight consumers, staff members, and senior researchers. The resulting shorter version (ACQ-CMH-98) was completed by 332 community mental health consumers sampled throughout Portugal. Factor (PCA) analysis, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability over 2 weeks (N = 33) showed good psychometric properties. The resulting six-factor structure with 48 items explains 48.88% of the total variance (KMO = 0.89; Bartlett p = .00). Internal consistency of the obtained dimensions ranges from .91 to .76. Associations of the measure with recovery, quality of life, and psychological distress scales add further evidence of construct validity. The adaptation of Nussbaum's framework stressed specific components that may enhance understanding and change within the community mental health system.

- Community psychology and social change: A story from the field of mental health in PortugalPublication . Ornelas, José; Moniz, Maria João Vargas; Duarte, TeresaA contextual and ecological intervention approach for people experiencing mental illness was developed with a primary focus on the mobilization of natural resources, the expansion of social networks and supports, and to systematically promote opportunities for activity within the community. The mutual help movement provided a major contribution to enhance and strengthen the social role of those experiencing mental illness. This social change process was inspired by empowerment theory and the goal of recovery through social and community participation. Therefore we present a community-based intervention, based on the principles and values of Community Psychology, a program implemented during the last twenty years in the field of mental health that contributed to changes in the mental health system in Portugal. A community-based support system has been organized to provide social supports in terms of housing, education and employment by enhancing the use of natural contexts, such as schools and businesses, and the diverse social resources available to the general public.
- Community-based participatory research: a collaborative study to measure capabilities towards recovery in mental health community organizationsPublication . Ornelas, José; Aguiar, Rita; Sacchetto, Beatrice; Monteiro, Maria Fátima JorgeThe purpose of this article is to offer a theoretical review on community based research, namely about collaborative processes and qualitative participatory methodologies, and to present an application of this framework to the research design. Method: It is provided a review on community-based research methodology, university-community partnerships, and is described the qualitative participatory methodology used in one collaborative study. Conclusion: following the partnership guidelines for collaborative community-university research, we highlight the participatory and qualitative process that intended to develop a measure of user’s capability gains fostered by mental health community based organizations.
- Comparison of housing first and traditional homeless service users in eight european countries: Protocol for a mixed methods, Multi-site studyPublication . Greenwood, Ronni Michelle; Manning, Rachel; O'Shaughnessy, Branagh R.; Cross, Oisin; Moniz, Maria João Vargas; Auquier, Pascal; Santinello, Massimo; Wolf, Judith R; Bokszczanin, Anna; Bernad, Roberto; Källmen, Håkan; Spinnewijn, Frederik; Ornelas, JoséHomeless services expend considerable resources to provide for service users' most basic needs, such as food and shelter, but their track record for ending homelessness is disappointing. An alternative model, Housing First, reversed the order of services so that homeless individuals are offered immediate access to independent housing, with wraparound supports but no treatment or abstinence requirements. Although the evidence base for Housing First's effectiveness in ending homelessness is robust, less is known about its effectiveness in promoting recovery.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to enhance the understanding of the major contributes of supported employment for the integration of people with mental illness. To explore these contributes was used a review of literature. We intend to explore the evolution of the supported employment model, the evidence based practice, and two additional concepts. The first one is the establishment of a carrier in specialized employment, increasing access to and success in university through supported education. The second one is the development of natural support networks to empower individuals’ roles in the workforce and decrease their reliance on professional support. This literature outlines the potential of supported education and natural supports for the future of supported employment.
- Critical insights on social connections in the context of resettlement for refugees and asylum seekersPublication . Briozzo, Erica; Vargas-Moniz, M.; Ornelas, JoséResettlement ofers a “safe solution” for people who have experienced displacement. Nevertheless, refugees face additional challenges once resettled, including the erosion of their social fabric and the disruption of refugee communities. Therefore, social connections are crucial in resettlement. So far, the literature on social connections has focused on their functions (e.g., social support) and neglected this concept to the detriment of its meaning and related factors, so an in-depth exploration of social connections is necessary, especially in the problematic context of resettlement. To this end, 41 articles published between 2011 and 2022 and conducted with refugees and asylum seekers in resettlement contexts, were identifed through searches in MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. The aim of this scoping review is to identify potentially broad literature on social connections in resettlement to provide an understanding of how refugees engage in social connections during this process. Four main social connections in the resettlement context emerged: (a) connections within the immediate community, (b) transnational connections, (c) connections with the mainstream community, and (d) connections with services. The results confrm the need to better explore how social connections impact refugees’ experiences in resettlement and to grasp their political meaning in resettlement contexts.
