Abstract(s)
As plataformas
A função
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to examine how variables such as: history, diversity and severity of deliberate self-harm (DSH), sense of belonginess to family and friends, functions of the DSH and identification with online content developers, contribute to the engagement of the Portuguese adolescents in online activities for and against DSH. A descriptive analysis of the social networks used for DSH online activities was carried out as well as the type of content accessed (in favor and against) were examined. In addition, an exploratory analysis was carried out regarding on how the variables described above, explain the occurrence of online activities in favor or against DSH. Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire, with 443 students from public and professional schools in the metropolitan area of Lisbon and in Algarve, aged between 12 and 21 years (M=15.18, SD=1.86). The results showed that 67.9% of the participants had some type of DSH online activity. Most frequently in Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, the typology of those contents was mostly against DSH. Adolescents with DSH history reported lower levels of online activities in different platforms both for and against DSH. Greater identification with those who create general DSH online content increased the probability of frequency of online activities in favor of DSH. Individuals who reported greater identification with friends and people who create online content in general and against DSH were more likely to engage in online activities against DSH. The interpersonal function of revenge was a predictor of online activities in favor of DSH and the interpersonal influence function was mostly identified by individuals who developed online activities against DSH. This study highlights the motivations why individuals are attracted to DSH online activities, as well as allowed to verify that adolescents themselves can form a support network for their peers on internet, as preventive DSH agents.
