Abstract(s)
Parental alienation is a worldwide phenomenon, which negatively impacts children and parents who are victims of this behavior. In the legal field, this term has been the subject of several studies and pointed out as a defense strategy adopted by most aggressors. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing the Portuguese adult population's level of knowledge on the parental alienation phenomenon, as well as exploring the participants' perception about the use of this term in court. Additionally, it analyses the factors influencing the participants' ability to detect cases involving Parental Alienation or Child Sexual Abuse. The study sample consisted of 623 participants aged between 18 and 72 years old. The instruments used were a questionnaire on the topic and 4 hypothetical scenarios involving parental hostility or allegations of child sexual abuse. The analysis of the results shows that most of the participants know the concept, although they consider it to be a little-known concept in society. It was also found that most participants do not have a formed opinion on whether the term PA is used correctly in the legal context. However, almost all of them considered it important to promote programs on this phenomenon, as well as others on domestic violence and child sexual abuse. It was possible to conclude that in scenarios marked by parental hostility and allegations of sexual abuse it was easier to detect the existence of PA and slightly easier to identify the alienating parent as the mother.
