Abstract(s)
Ao longo dos anos, muita da investigação feita sobre veteranos da "Guerra Colonial Portuguesa" focou-se principalmente na compreensão da sintomatologia do PSPT e outras questões de saúde relacionadas à guerra. Este estudo mudou a sua atenção para a exploração das dimensões subjetivas e existenciais da experiência traumática da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa e de como estas evoluíram ao longo dos anos para aqueles que nela participaram. Para este fim, um total de sete ex-combatentes foram recrutados e entrevistados sobre as suas experiências de guerra e vidas após a guerra. Estes dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas semiestruturadas e analisados qualitativamente, utilizando a Análise Fenomenológica Interpretativa (IPA), incluindo alguns aspetos da Análise Narrativa (NA). Isto resultou na identificação de cinco temas principais, cada um contendo uma variedade de subtemas adjacentes: (1) O papel da coletividade portuguesa na preconcepção da guerra; (2) A transição para um “Ser na Guerra”; (3) A persistência deste “Ser na Guerra” na vida civil;
ABSTRACT: Over the years, much of the research done into veterans of the “Portuguese Colonial War” focused mainly on understanding PTSD symptomatology and other war-related health issues. This study shifted its attention to the exploration of the subjective and existential dimensions of the traumatic experience of the Portuguese Colonial War and how they evolved over the years for those who participated in it. To this end, a total of seven former combatants were recruited and interviewed about their war experiences and lives after the war. This data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed qualitatively, through the use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) including some aspects of Narrative Analysis (NA). This resulted in the identification of five main themes, each containing a variety of subthemes adjacent to them: (1) The role of portuguese collectivity in the preconception of the war; (2) The transition to a “War Dasein”; (3) The persistence of this “War Dasein” in civilian life; (4) The experiential duality of relations; (5) The retrospective 50 years after the end of the war. The findings of this study provided a more subjective and deeper understanding of the Portuguese Colonial War experience. These insights may prove valuable not only in the clinical practice regarding how to approach and support them in dealing war-related health issues these veterans, such as PTSD, but also from a psychoeducational standpoint, raising awareness within the clinical community and amongst the general public, thus fostering a more understanding and empathic view of these veterans’ experiences.
