Abstract(s)
The main objective of this study was to analyse the adolescent maternal influence in the mother-infant relationship, given that the quality of this relationship will result in an effective development of physical, emotional and cognitive skills in the infant. The life is a continuous process of changes and adjustments. In some occasions these changes happen in a rapid succession. This is the case in adolescence, in pregnancy and in maternity. These are periods of crises due to profound physical, psychological and social changes taking place. The crisis in this context is considered as a moment of rupture with mechanisms in previous functioning already established and stabilized. When all these are simultaneous, woman will have to make a double effort in coping and in facing complex changes. The sample was constituted of four adolescent first-time mothers, their ages ranging from 16 to 18, as well as their babies. The method used was a case study and the instrument applied was Esther Bick’s Observation Method of Infants, a semi-directive interview of mothers and the Content Analysis. Every mother and child diad interacted in a different way, being the mother and the infant the interlocutors of these differences. Although able to give primary care to their children, three of the four mothers demonstrated impoverished relationship concerning the third element, being more functional in relation with the babies.
