Abstract(s)
The present study aimed to map, explore, and expand scientific knowledge about the factors that influence the persistence of women who are victims of domestic violence in abusive relationships. More specifically, it sought to understand and examine the concept of domestic violence by analysing the predictive factors associated with remaining in an abusive relationship. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative approach was adopted, involving a systematic review focused on the central theme of this dissertation. The databases consulted were APA PsycINFO, APA PsycArticles, MEDLINE, and Web of Science, using the following descriptors: domestic violence, intimate partner violence, domestic abuse, spousal abuse, stay, persist, end, return, remain, and battered women. The findings indicate that several factors contribute to a victim’s decision to remain in an abusive relationship, with particular emphasis on cultural influences. In addition, emotional and financial dependence, educational level, employability, number of dependents (children), mental health conditions, and cognitive distortions were also found to play an important role in this decision-making process. The results were discussed in light of empirical studies on the topic. Finally, the main limitations of the study are presented, providing useful directions for future research.
