ABSTRACT: This study aims to explore the relationship between the representations of adult attachment and the degree of overcharging and family resilience of children caregivers, when providing care to elderly parents who are dependent, on a sample of 30 participants. Access to the secure base scripts of the subjects was performed by means of Adult Attachment Narratives (Waters & Waters, 2006), while the degree of caregiver burden and responsiveness to the needs of their families that this context entails were measured, respectively, using the Questionnaire Assessment of Informal Caregiver (Martins, Ribeiro & Garret, 2003) and the Profile Family Resilience (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1993). Associated with the caregivers’ knowledge of secure base scripts, was observed a higher capacity for: change in their life projects, taking an additional financial hardship due to caring of the elderly, and better understanding the elderly parent’s behaviors, thus preventing the onset of negative emotions and feeling more supported by the rest of the family. Regarding family resilience, higher the degree of security revealed by the scripts greater the ability for family flexibility and involvement, and lowered the sense of family consistency. Although not fully corroborating our hypothesis, the results confirm the relevance and predictive character that attachment quality can assume, showing a more positive and appropriate experience, when exercising the care giving role for their dependent elderly parents.
