ABSTRACT: The main purpose of the following investigation is to verify if there are significant discrepancies between the public and private education sectors in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in terms of Organizational Reputation, Work Performance and Engagement, as well as verify the effect of these variables on public sector employees. This study includes the participation of 186 teachers, all of them linked to educational institutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (97 through the public sector and 89 through the private sector), who voluntarily answered a questionnaire placed online. The results show that the differences between the public and private sectors are not significant regarding Engagement, however, the variable Organizational Reputation is slightly higher in the Private Sector and the variable Performance in the Public Sector. Additionally, it was verified that the Organizational Reputation variable exerts a positive and significant effect on both the Performance and Engagement variables, and this effect has greater significance in the employee’s work Engagement.
