Abstract(s)
This research focuses on the opportunities and challenges that exist in the work of community intervention with a group of young Roma women, carried out by the Centre for Community Development of Ameixoeira (CDCA) in the context of a social housing neighborhood of Lisbon. Both the motivations and the challenges faced by these young women that participated in an education and training project (PIEF) are discussed based on semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with staff and the community targeted of the interventions. The intention of this study is to reflect on strategies for working together and in a participatory way, in order to accomplish a community and territorial sustainable development. Qualitative research is presented as the best set of methods for working with this group, not only extremely vulnerable, but also reductively involved by researchers in their works. It should also be noted that the effective involvement of Roma communities is based on the need to establish minimum relations of trust between the community and researchers and, in this sense, time seems to play a key role. It is also discussed in a theoretical reflection, the importance of the focus on partnerships between organizations and associations that work with communities and the political power, intending to show the essential link between the interventions at local level and the decisions at the political level. Within this theoretical reflection, is also our aim to analyze some other issues such as choice opportunities, individual pathways and strategies of cultural survival in their relationship with gender issues within the Roma communities.
