O fenómeno da acumulação de animais - Contributos da intervenção psicológica

Abstract(s)
A acumulação de animais é um fenómeno pouco estudado e subestimado. Ocorre em
Portugal, com graves repercussões para a vida das pessoas com experiência em acumulação
de animais, dos animais acumulados e das comunidades, com riscos para a saúde pública. O
presente estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar esta problemática, as pessoas com experiência
em acumulação de animais e os animais detidos, bem como identificar a forma como se
processa a intervenção em Portugal e averiguar a existência de intervenção psicológica.
Realizaram-se dez entrevistas semiestruturadas a dez profissionais com funções nos processos
de intervenção de acumulação de animais. As entrevistas foram analisadas através do método
de Análise Temática e de Redução de Dados. Foi aplicado, em paralelo, um Formulário de
Relato de Caso a trinta e seis profissionais nas mesmas condições. Os resultados indicam que
a acumulação de animais é vista em Portugal como um “problema animal” e não como um
problema de saúde humana, que se manifesta e resolve de forma semelhante à descrita pela
literatura. Foram identificadas lacunas significativas ao nível da intervenção, incluindo a
inexistência de intervenção psicológica.
ABSTRACT: Animal hoarding is an understudied and underestimated phenomenon. It occurs in Portugal, with serious repercussions for the lives of people with experience in animal hoarding, hoarded animals and communities, with risks to public health. The present study aims to characterize the people who hoard and the animals detained, as well as identify the way in which the intervention is carried out in Portugal and investigate the existence of psychological intervention. Ten semi-structured interviews were carried out with ten professionals working in animal accumulation intervention processes. The interviews were analysed using the Thematic Analysis and Data Reduction methods. A Case Report Form was applied, in parallel, to thirty-six professionals under the same conditions. The results indicate that the accumulation of animals is seen in Portugal as an “animal problem” and not as a human health problem, which manifests and solves in a similar way to that described in the literature. Important gaps in intervention were identified, including the lack of psychological intervention.
