Abstract(s)
pacientes.
ABSTRACT: A descriptive-observational cross-sectional study was made aiming at assessing the correlation of Subjective Well-Being (SWB) with Health, using a nonprobabilistic sampling with 264 adult respondents (156 female and 198 male) who completed self-report questionnaires through the snowball sampling method. Six types of measures were used, though still in process of adaptation to the Portuguese population: SWLS (Bertoquini, 2005) and PANAS (Bertoquini, 2005) that are components of the Subjective Well-Being; General Health Questionnaire-GHQ28 (Pais Ribeiro & Antunes, 2003), a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS); and a socio-demographic questionnaire. All show strong psychometric properties and evidence of successful transcultural application. The results show that Subjective Well-Being (SWB) correlates positively with Health. The respondents with higher scores are more satisfied with their lives, show more positive affect and feel healthier. Opposingly the respondents with high negative affect feel sicker. Women tend to be less healthy than men and to express more physical complaints. Those more satisfied with life have higher education levels, higher professional positions and are married. The global score is high in health and moderate to high in SWB. This topic of research may be useful for psychologists, working in the area of Health, as it may contribute to the identification of relevant critical factors in patients’ quality of life
