Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present research is, in an exploratory manner, to acknowledge and characterize the male victim of domestic violence, as well as a wider clinical understanding of the phenomenon. For that, a sample of 41 domestic violence male victim support processes were collected at the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) Lisbon´s office in 2008. The content analyses of those support processes was the instrument chosen to fulfill the objectives of this research. The results lead us to the reality of male victimization, which as harmful consequences to their physical and mental health. The victims experience (sometimes severe) physical injuries and psychological abuse, fearing humiliation and disbelief if they ever have the courage to report the violence to the authorities, or even to family and friends. Nevertheless, the replication of this research may reinforce the results and provide more data about the characteristics and consequences of this form of abuse.
