ABSTRACT: Taking into account the variety of results obtained in wide range of studies about the phenomenon of bullying amongst peers, the aim of the present study is to contribute to the understanding of the several forms these behaviours can take, and appreciate in which way do these bear relation to certain socio-demographic (e.g. gender, year of study, age) and self-concept variables. A sample comprising 192 participants of middle school students from Lisbon County, were administered the Social Exclusion and School-related Violence Questionnaire (QEVE). The results indicate that most frequent display of bullying behaviours correlate with social and verbal exclusion behaviours. Regarding the socio-demographic variables, the most significant differences were only found at the level of gender relations. The boys reported higher overall rates of both “social exclusion and verbal” and physical aggressive behaviour when compared with girls. The study also identified four other groups, the victims, aggressors, victim-aggressors and non-involved. Results point towards significant differences amongst these groups in the selfconcept categories (social, physical, appearance, romantic attraction) and in self-esteem.
