Abstract(s)
This study aims to examine the relationship between the concept of responsibility that parents have about their role in the education of children (active or passive), the invitations of the children and the school to parental involvement in schooling and its relations with the practices of parental involvement. It also seeks to examine whether there are differences depending on years of schooling (6 and 9 years) and socio-cultural level of the mothers (lower and upper minimum scholar level approved by the government). This study involved 200 mothers of students of 6 and 9 years of schooling who attend a public school's board of Sintra, answering to the questionnaire "Os Pais e a Escolaridade" (Pedro, 2007). The results suggest a link between the concept of responsibility in the upbringing of children, requests for the involvement of parents in education and parental involvement. A concept of education responsibility more active and greater understanding to invitations for the involvement of parents in children's education, contributes to a greater involvement of parents in education. The variables considered have significant differences in terms of years of schooling for children - 6 and 9 years. Mothers of students from 6 years of schooling are more involved in education, have higher values of responsibility and a greater awareness to the demands than of the mothers of students in 9th grade. However, no significant differences exist in terms of socio-cultural level of mothers. Noting further that a link exists between the design of responsibility in the education of children and the practices of parental involvement developed.
