Abstract(s)
conflitos do casal neste percurso. Assim, foi possível identificar quatro estilos de
evolução dos casais: “Os Gémeos”, “Os Pais e Filhos”, “Os Idealizados” e “Os
Desiludidos”.
ABSTRACT: This work aimed to build a comprehensive model of the couple’s relationship evolution and clarify the existing differences between men and women over this process, in light of couple’s psychodynamic perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at seven couples, where each man and woman was interviewed separately. The selected couples have been married between 26 and 48 years, aged 47 to 68. The gathered data have been subjected to content analysis which simultaneously intended to gain access to their speech manifest and latent contents. This analysis emphasized the determining role of the couple’s conflict in this process. Therefore, it was possible to identify four styles of couples’ evolution: “The Twins”, “The Parents and Sons”, “The Idealized” and “The Disappointed”. These styles were defined by the nature of the dominant conflict, by the unlashed anguish and the couple’s defences towards it. Men and women seem to have differentiated roles when establishing the several evolution styles. Women seem to be more determining on the establishment of the dominant conflict and men in the choice of the defence mechanisms when facing it. Differences between genders, contrary to traditional stereotypes of the marriage roles, were found as a result of the social changes related to the participants’ generation.
