Abstract(s)
The transition to university is a significant life event which implies big changes in the lives of young students. The changes are even more pronounced for those who have to move from archipelagos such as Azores, pursuing for knowledge and a better future, as they not only need to leave the house where they have always lived, their family and friends, but also have to adapt to a new environment with different resources. This transition should be a pleasant experience; however, it turns out that the 7 impact is not linear and that for this new stage, many tools are needed to deal with the changes, whether in terms of increased responsibilities or the emotional management itself. Young people are likely to feel a wide and varied range of emotions, positive and negative in nature. Starting from a methodological approach set in a phenomenological perspective, this work aims to understand the young student’s personal experience, taking into account their behavior, the lived emotions and the psychological meanings associated with the experience of being a displaced university student. Five female and male participants aged between twenty two and twenty four were interviewed and asked to describe their experience related to the university entrance, consequently leaving home. Then, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Amedeo Giorgi's phenomenological descriptive method.
