Abstract(s)
Literature has indicated that global processing is associated with feelings such as love, and friendship and local processing is associated with lust (or sexual desire). The purpose of this study was to understand if the relation between processing and activated feelings (sexual desire, love, friendship) also occurred in reference to the self. We sought to understand if this relationship is identified in an initial attraction situation of the self and if feelings emerge for a given target in different relational contexts (dating vs. professional). We explored the role of sociosexuality and mood in the same relationship. A total of 91 participants answered a web survey, where the tendency for each participant to engage in global-local processing was measured through a perceptual task. Then, we presented an alleged new social network associated to one of two relational contexts; dating or professional. The results suggest that under these conditions global-local processing did not influence the activated feelings towards a target in the expected direction. Only in the professional context was an effect of the type of processing in all feelings. However, contrary to expected, the impact on sexual desire, love and friendship went in the same direction. In this study the role of sociosexuality and gender of participants was highlighted. Sociosexuality moderated the relationship of processing with sexual desire only to male participants. This suggests that future studies should take these variables into account.
