Abstract(s)
Directos, (2) Cuidados Indirectos, (3) Ensino/Disciplina, (4) Brincadeira e (5) Lazer no
exterior.
ABSTRACT: The purpose of the current assignment is the study of the relationship between the paternal involvement in the child-rearing activities and their social skills. Some studies, point that the increased participation of the father, in the child-rearing activities, can strengthen the secure base relationship with the progenitor, which in turn, will influence the social relationship of the child. The participants are 106 children in preschool, their parents and kindergarten teachers. The data about the involvement were gathered through the Escala de Envolvimento Parental: Participação em Actividades de Cuidados e de Socialização (Monteiro, Veríssimo & Pessoa e Costa, 2008). The scale consists of 26 items, organised in 5 dimensions: (1) Direct Care, (2) Indirect Care, (3) Teaching / Discipline, (4) Play and (5) Leisure outside the home. The Social Skill data were gathered with the kindergarten teachers and parents through the SCBE-30 (LaFreniere & Dumas, 1996), instrument structured in 3 sub-scales: Social Skill, Aggressiveness and Anxiety. The results point to the fact that the mother assumes major responsibility in what concerns the Direct Cares and that a shared participation is verified in the remained activities. The more involved in the play activities is the father, the more competent in social terms is the child. No significant correlations between the way the mother describes the child in what concerns social skills and the paternal involvement were found. Finally, the more involved in the leisure and discipline activities is the father, the more competent in social terms is the child, accordingly with the kindergarten teacher’s opinion.
