Psychometric properties of the Psychopathy Checklist : Youth version among portuguese juvenile delinquents
Publication . Pechorro, Pedro Fernandes dos Santos; Barroso, Ricardo; Maroco, João; Vieira, Rui Xavier; Gonçalves, Rui Abrunhosa
The main aim of the present study was to examine some psychometric properties of the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV) among Portuguese juvenile delinquents. With forensic sample of 192 incarcerated male participants, the Portuguese version of the PCL:YV demonstrated promising psychometric properties of the three-factor model of youth psychopathy, internal consistency, convergent validity, concurrent validity, and retrospective validity that generally justify its use among Portuguese youths. Statistically significant associations were found with age of criminal onset, frequency of crimes, number of victims, and use of physical violence.
Adaptation of the Basic Empathy Scale among a portuguese sample of incarcerated juvenile offenders
Publication . Pechorro, Pedro Fernandes dos Santos; Ray, James V.; Salas-Wright, Christopher P.; Maroco, João; Gonçalves, Rui Abrunhosa
The main aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the
Basic Empathy Scale (BES) and of its adapted short version among a forensic sample
of incarcerated male juvenile offenders (N = 221). The Portuguese validations of the
BES and its adapted short version demonstrated good psychometric properties, namely
in terms of the two-factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity,
discriminant validity, and concurrent validity that generally justifies its use among
this population. Statistically significant associations were found with callous–
unemotional traits and social anxiety. Findings are discussed in terms of the use of
the BES and its adapted short version with juvenile offenders.
Delinquência juvenil: Um estudo comparativo de rapazes institucionalizados
Publication .
amostra forense (n = 221; M = 15.86 anos; DP = 1.31 anos; amplitude = 13-20 anos)
The social anxiety scale for adolescents : Measurement invariance and psychometric properties among a school sample of portuguese youths
Publication . Pechorro, Pedro Fernandes dos Santos; Ayala-Nunes, Lara; Nunes, Maria Cristina de Oliveira Salgado; Maroco, João; Gonçalves, Rui Abrunhosa
Over the last decades there has been an increased interest in assessing social anxiety in adolescents. This study aims to validate the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) to Portuguese youth, and to examine its invariance across gender as well as its psychometric properties. The participants were 782 Portuguese youths (371 males, 411 females), with an average age of 15.87 years (SD = 1.72). The results support the original three-factor structure of the SAS-A, with measurement invariance being found across gender, with females scoring higher than males on two subscales. High levels of internal consistency were found. Positive associations with empathy demonstrated that high socially anxious adolescents have elevated empathy tendencies. Mostly null or low negative associations were found with measures of psychopathic traits, callous-unemotional traits and aggression. Study findings provide evidence that the SAS-A is a psychometrically sound instrument that shows measurement invariance between genders, good reliability and positive correlations with empathy.
Psychometric properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 among a Portuguese sample of incarcerated juvenile offenders
Publication . Pechorro, Pedro Fernandes dos Santos; Maroco, João; Ray, James V.; Gonçalves, Rui Abrunhosa
The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the
Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 (BIS-11) among a forensic sample of
incarcerated male juvenile offenders (N = 221). Principal Component Analysis
with Promax rotation revealed the expected 6-factor structure, but Confirmatory
Factor Analysis of the 6-factor first-order and the 3-factor second-order factorial
structures did not present sufficiently good fits. Despite that, the Portuguese
adaptation of the BIS-11 demonstrated generally acceptable psychometric
properties in terms of internal consistency, mean inter-item correlation,
convergent validity, discriminant validity, and concurrent validity that justifies its
use among the youth forensic population. Statistically significant associations
were found with age of crime onset, conduct disorder, crime seriousness, alcohol
use and drug use.
