Abstract(s)
futura destas mulheres a nível familiar.
ABSTRACT: Prison is one of the most favourable settings for mental disorders development and suicide attempts among female inmates, being the distance from the family one of the main reasons pointed out. This study aims to understand the family impact throughout the process of imprisonment and understand these women's future prospects at the family level. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, using a semi-structured interview and a Sociodemographic and Legal-Penal Questionnaire, to 12 Portuguese women, aged between 33 and 67 years old, who are serving a sentence in the Prison Establishments of Tires and Santa Cruz do Bispo Feminino. For data analysis a content analysis was used. The results show that the family plays an important role throughout the whole process of imprisonment, acting as a source of motivation to change criminal behaviour, a source of strength and hope to better face the prison experience and to foresee a more optimistic future in freedom, which can all contribute to a reduction of eventual recidivism. Contact with the family, mainly during visits, is considered by these women as indispensable for the maintenance of their family ties, for their well-being and their loved ones, however, there are several obstacles at this level, of a logistical and/or economic nature, or of the prison staff itself. We conclude the study with suggestions for future studies and for implementation of practices in the prison system
