Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: In Portugal, deliberate self-harm are increasingly common among adolescents. This study aims to understand the impact of the roles associated with self-injurious behaviors on the severity and diversity of these behaviors. It also aims to understand how family functioning variables (e.g., communication and conflicts) influence the trajectory and development of these behaviors, as well as the intentions of these young people to ask for help. The sample consisted of 358 participants aged between 12 and 22 years old, from three schools in the district of Setúbal, to whom the following instruments were applied: FACES IV, Family Climate Inventory, Inventory of Deliberate Self- Harm Behaviours, Help-Seeking Questionnaire of Representations about the Functions of Deliberate Self-Harm for Adolescents and Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The most notable results show that intrapersonal functions contribute to increased severity and diversity. There were also differences in communication and family conflicts between adolescents who practice deliberate self-harm and those who do not. Communication and Conflicts show significant correlations with method severity and diversity. Additionally, help-seeking is associated only with family variables, more specifically, the study found differences in family communication between adolescents who ask the family for help and those who do not.
