Abstract(s)
Emotional processes and therapeutic alliance have been an interest target for psychology-based studies. We have witnessed a significant increase of results in psychotherapy, based on the therapeutic alliance. The main goal of this study was to explore the impact of emotional processes, namely, emotional regulation and emotional expressivity, in the therapeutic alliance and in the difficulties felt by the therapist. We also wanted to assess if the emotional processes can predict the therapeutic alliance and if the difficulty felt by the therapists work as a mediating variable between emotional processes and therapeutic alliance. For this purpose, one non-probabilistic sample of one hundred and ten therapists was collected. The sample was composed by ninety-two women and eighteen men, in the age range of twenty-four to sixty-eight years old and a non-correlational methodology was used. All the data was analyzed quantitatively, using the multiple linear regression. The results suggested that the emotional processes assessed in this study, more particularly emotional expressivity, add a positive impact to the therapeutic alliance, contrarily to the emotional regulation, that only affected it marginally. The difficulties felt by the therapist where concluded to act as a mediator effect in the relationship between emotional process and therapeutic alliance. Concluding, emotional processes of therapist are linked to the relation established with the patient and the consequent success of therapy. This study contributes to complement the information on this field, facilitating the comprehension of factors that could improve the therapeutic alliance.
