No que concerne ao isolamento social e à depressão, têm sido realizadas mais investigações
acerca da infância. Como tal, e devido à existência de poucos estudos desta temática na
adolescência, o actual estudo pretendeu averiguar a correlação entre os diversos tipos de
isolamento social e depressão em pré-adolescentes e adolescentes. Para tal, foi estudada uma
amostragem de 412 adolescente ( 208 raparigas e 204 rapazes), com idades compreendidas entre
os 11 e os 14 anos. Os adolescentes encontravam-se no 7º, 8º e 9º anos de escolaridade estando
integrados em duas escolas públicas (região de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo). Foram utilizados os
instrumentos Extended Class Play (ECP) e Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI) para avaliar os tipos
de isolamento social e depressão, respectivamente. Os resultados demonstraram a existência de
diferenças significativas entre os grupos de isolados e não isolados socialmente no que respeita à
depressão. Conclui-se a presença de uma relação entre o isolamento social e a depressão,
nomeadamente, que o isolamento social pode influenciar uma possível sintomatologia depressiva
como também, a depressão pode conduzir ao isolamento nos jovens, indo ao encontro com a
literatura existente.
ABSTRACT: With regard to social isolation and depression, more research have been performed during childhood. As such, and because there are few studies of this issue in adolescents, the current study sought to determine the correlation between different types of social isolation and depression in pre-teens and teens. To this end, a sample of 412 adolescents (208 girls and 204 boys), aged between 11 and 14 years were studied. The teens were in the 7th, 8th to 9th degraders being integrated in two public schools (Lisbon and "Vale do Tejo" region). The Extended Class Play (ECP) and Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI) were used, to assess the types of social isolation and depression, respectively. The results showed the existence of significant differences between the groups of isolated and non-isolated with regard to social depression. It has been concluded the presence of a relationship between social isolation and depression, in particular, that social isolation may influence a possible depressive symptoms as well as depression can lead to isolation in young people, meeting with the existing literature.
