Abstract(s)
Community leadership is a model of leadership in which leadership is shared by a group of people and each person is called to take part in leading the group by proposing ideas and visions. In this model, management is not necessarily born from a single leader, but from the contribution of multiple elements and the general objective is to increase the process of social change. In this study, we aimed to understand which were the essential factors for the activation of leadership processes. The study had a qualitative design, we created a script based on the literature and study objectives. We conducted semi-directive interviews with seven participants aged between 31 and 80 years, all with Cape Verdean ancestry. We collected data in the Lisbon region in the Cova da Moura, Casal de São Brás, Zambujal, Almada, Monte de Caparica and Bela Vista neighborhoods in Setúbal. In addition to the interviews that were also carried out with unstructured observation, we visited the places and all interviews were in person. We transcribed the interviews, organized the data, and carried out their thematic analysis. We identified four main themes: (1) the contextual factors that activated the leadership processes, (2) the leadership development processes, (3) the individual dimension of leadership, and (4) the challenges. The results point to the existence of historical-social contextual factors that activate awareness processes and that life history, culture, and the sense of community can contribute to the person becoming involved in leadership processes.
