Abstract(s)
relações interpessoais e as habilidades sociais.
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Depression is the main cause of disability worldwide, with implications for the various aspects of the lives of those affected by it, including interpersonal relationships and social skills. However, within this context, the complexity of the interpersonal context of adults living in Portugal with depression has been relatively unexplored. Thus, the present study aimed to: 1) study the relationship between depression symptoms and interpersonal relationship issues and social skills, as well as the relationship between interpersonal problems and social skills; 3) ascertain to what extent the interpersonal issues and social skills of individuals with depression symptoms differ from those without depression symptoms; 3) investigate whether the social skills of individuals with depression are linked to specific interpersonal issues. Method: A sample of 201 participants completed the sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Social Skills Inventory – Del Prette (IHS-Del Prette), the Interpersonal Problems Inventory (IPI–32) and the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI -II). Results: It was found that depression symptoms were a statistically significant predictor of interpersonal problems and social skills, and that reporting fewer skills was a significant predictor of interpersonal problems. Additionally, individuals with more depression symptoms exhibited have more interpersonal problems in the socially inhibited and vindictive/egocentric octants and more deficits in social skills in the conversation and social confidence factors, as well as in positive affect self-expression. Finally, it was found that the octants of interpersonal problems associated with greater deficits in social skills were the socially inhibited and the non assertive ones. Conclusion: The results of the current study highlight the way in which depression and the interpersonal context are related, possibly impacting the well-being and daily life of the adult population living in Portugal with depression symptoms.
