Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Attachment has a huge impact on infant development. The quality of mother-baby interactions, including nighttime interactions, has an influence on the structure of the bond, such that sleep arrangements can affect the quality of attachment. There has been a growing interest in the practice of co-sleeping, but still little is known about its relationship with attachment. This study aims to describe this practice in Portugal and attempt to understand its association with the quality of mother-baby attachment. 984 mothers (M= 32.8; SD= 4.24) of babies between 6 and 24 months (M= 14.08; SD= 5.36) participated. The results indicate that co-sleeping appears to be associated with greater maternal enjoyment in interacting with the baby. However, the most significant influence on attachment seems to come from variables related to other sleep habits factors, regardless of the chosen sleep arrangement, such as maternal satisfaction. The findings highlight the complexity of the subject, emphasizing the need for a more objective and in-depth analysis of attachment and sleep.
