Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The main objective of this research is to understand the relationship between emotional regulation and the quality of adolescent friendship in feminine and masculine genders. The sample consists of 55 subjects aged between 12 and 15 years, who are attending the 3rd cycle of a school group in the district of Setúbal. Regarding the instruments, the Friendship Quality Questionnaire (FQQ) was used to assess the quality of friendship and the perception that the subjects have of qualitative aspects of their friendship relationships and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA) to assess the capacity for emotional regulation using the strategies of emotional suppression and cognitive reassessment. The results show that there are no differences between boys and girls regarding the association of emotion regulation with the quality of friendship. There was a positive association between cognitive reappraisal and conflict resolution, and a negative association between emotional suppression, and respectively, validation and care, help and guidance as well as the sharing of intimacy, particularly in the case of girls. The strategy of emotional suppression has a significant and negative impact on the quality of the friendship, regardless of the levels of cognitive reappraisal, and in females this impact is greater. It was also found that emotion regulation has no impact on the conflict and betrayal dimension, although levels of this dimension are higher in girls. In the future, it would be important to study the relations between the present variables with social isolation and the quality of parental attachment.
