ABSTRACT: Obesity poses a threat to public health. Its treatment goes beyond slimming to a successful weight loss (SWL), including its long-term maintenance. Thus, it is crucial to understand which factors contribute to this. It is intended to qualitatively explore the perceived positive/negative consequences and the spontaneous self-concept of individuals who have made a SWL (using Content Analysis and Thematic Analysis), and to explore, quantitatively, the independence between categories (Chi-square Test). In total, 40 adults (28 women) who lost more than 9% of their weight and maintained it (for at least 12 months) participated. Overall, 852 encodings, 28 categories and 121 subcategories emerged. Positive consequences mentions were revealed much higher frequencies than the negative consequences. Categories such as "Health" (e.g., Better Mobility), "Psychological" (e.g.,, SWL Depreciation), "Body Image" (e.g.,, Satisfaction), "Family Membersâ (e.g.,, Jealousy), "Sexual" (e.g.,, Sexual Disinhibition), "Social" (e.g.,, Meal Invitation Restriction), "Professional" (e.g.,, Decreased Physical Fatigue) and "Economic" (e.g.,, Clothing Expenses) emerged. The positive self-concept also obtained a superior number of mentions than the negative categories such as "Self-esteem", "Physical Capacity"; "Identity" (e.g., Model to Others), "Body Image" (e.g., Satisfaction), "Explicit Personality" (e.g., Low Self-efficacy), "Professional" (e.g., Fulfilled); "Health" (e.g., Healthy); and "Social" (e.g., Supportive). These results emphasize the diversity of perceived consequences, including negative experiences associated with SWL. In addition, there is also a spontaneous self-concept that is mostly positive. These two dimensions may be combine to reinforce success, being their understanding important in order to better inform interventions in this the area.
