Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Portugal is the second country in the European Union with highest rate of births in adolescent mothers aged between 15 and 19 years old. The mother’s perception of her maternal competencies and her self-esteem influence the quality of the bond between the dyad, either positively or negatively. The present study examined, in a sample of 85 adolescent mothers aged between 15 and 19 years old (M=18; DP=1.02) with babies aged between 4 and 18 months (M=10.24; DP=4.26), the relationship between maternal perception of competencies and maternal self-esteem in the quality of the bond. The results revealed that the associations between maternal perception of competencies and bond quality were significant and positive, indicating that a higher perception of competencies was associated with higher bond quality within the dyad. The associations between maternal self-esteem and bond quality were also significant and positive, demonstrating that a mother with high self-esteem is more likely to establish a positive bond with her child. The results achieved have relevance in understanding the importance of maternal perception of competencies and maternal self-esteem in the bond relationship.
