Statistics show that there is a significant increase in the average life expectancy leading into the aging of the Portuguese population. For this reason, it is important to take into consideration the role of love when attempting to study the elderly. This, however, has not been the object of those many studies, the existing literature being scarce. This study was designed to investigate the main significant predictors of the importance of loving relationship among senior people and to understand the role of religion on the importance of love. A sample of 748 individuals was obtained interviewing students of Senior Universities and people attending several social facilities, over 65 years of age. The instruments used were the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Index of Quality of Life (EUROHISQOL-8), Power et al, 2006), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Dierner Emmons, Larsen & Friffinm 1985); Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (EADS-7; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) and Positive and the Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark & Tellegn, 1988). The results obtained showed that marital status, education, the importance of sexual intercourse, negative affections and the relationship satisfaction are significant predictors of the importance that senior people give to loving relationship. One of the findings of this study was that in comparison to women, men consider love to be significantly more important. The aim of this study is to show how relevant this is to demystify and obtain a better understanding of this issue.
