Abstract(s)
Self-harm behavior (SHB) affects young people and adults in all parts of the world. They usually start in adolescence, and it is also at this stage that these behaviors are most prevalent. The literature has been trying to understand better the theme of self-harm behavior, namely the influence that adolescents' self-concept may have on these behaviors, although it isnât clear what is the directionality of this relationship. Hopelessness has also been studied, since it has been proved to be important to explain the possible appearance of self-harm behavior. There seems to be a relationship between the two concepts, although sometimes indirectly. Thus, this study aims to study the relationship between self-concept and self-harm behavior during adolescence. It is intended to analyse if the perception that adolescents have about themselves influences the existence or not of self-harm behaviors, and to analyze which dimensions of self-concept are more important for young people with self-harm behaviors. It is hoped to better understand the directionality of the effect between self-concept and SHB. A research problem is also proposed, where the relationship between the different forms (past, present and future) of the self-concept and self-harmful behaviors are analyzed. Another objective is to verify if there is a relationship between hopelessness and the SHB of the teenagers. The sample is composed by 136 participants, aged between 13 and 21 years, from community and clinical contexts. Data were collected using a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, the Inventory of Self-Harm Behaviors and the âWho Am I?â Questionnaire. The results revealed the influence of self-concept on SHB, which dimensions most affect these behaviors, in addition to the direction of the relationship between the two variables. The present and future forms of self-concept seem to have more influence and relevance to self-harm behaviors than the past. Hopelessness was shown to be partially significant when related to the SHB.
