Abstract(s)
The purpose of the current study was to characterize the experience of fatherhood in Portugal today, in its subjective aspects. This knowledge is useful to clarify the uniqueness of this experience among men, and to contribute to accelerating changes in social and cultural stereotypes. This is a qualitative study, with semi-structured interviews realized with eight Portuguese men, between 38 and 45 years old, married or in common-law marriage with a woman, with a child between 3 and 10 years old. Data analysis was developed using the Thematic Analysis method. From the results obtained, it is possible to visualize changes in the exercise and experience of fatherhood today in Portugal. These changes highlight the role played by the father in the child's care and development. Within the studied sample, parents occupy the role of caregivers, without ceasing to be providers. In other words, fathers and mothers occupy close places in the exercise of parenting, as caregivers and providers, sharing these roles, which in the past, socially and culturally were strictly separated. With this, aspects related to the individual experience of fatherhood, the relationship and care with the child, the role of the mother, the coparental relationship, family management and reconciliation with the careers of both father and mother, develop in a dynamics and context of deconstruction of gender stereotypes.
