Abstract(s)
There are already several studies that examine adverse childhood experiences and the consequent manifestation of criminal behavior in adulthood, however, so far, the study between the different adverse childhood experiences and its influence on the practice of various types of crime in adulthood needs further analysis. This investigation has the objective to analyze the predictive capacity of each one of the adverse childhood experiences regarding criminal behavior self-reported in the past year. The study sample was composed of 618 young people from the community, aged between 18 and 20 years, who were evaluated through the following instruments: General Questionnaire on Social and Family Situation, Questionnaire of Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the Variety Scale of Deviant Behavior. The results obtained suggest that domestic violence is associated with the crime of aggression; sexual abuse is associated with the crime of theft, aggression and illegal possession of weapons; physical abuse is associated with the crime of theft and trafficking illegal substances; and emotional abuse is associated with illegal possession of weapons. The results corroborate the literature as it suggested that certain adverse childhood experiences are predictors of criminal behavior in adulthood. However, it appears that physical negligence and emotional negligence are not statistically significant predictors of any crime studied, which does not meet the expected result. Limitations of this study, proposals for future studies, clinical and social recommendations are presented.
