Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This study deepens knowledge about the relationship between traditional masculinity and suicidal ideation, by exploring the factors that contribute to understanding its effect. In this regard, we sought to ascertain the mediating role of help-seeking intention (formal and informal), multiple group membership and relationship satisfaction in the association between specific norms of traditional masculinity (emotional control and self-reliance) and suicidal ideation. This study included 169 participants who identified as male. The results confirmed a correlation between self-reliance and suicidal ideation, as well as the mediating effect of help-seeking intention, that unexpectedly presented contradictory results in terms of sources of help: the informal help-seeking intention presented a negative correlation with suicidal ideation and the formal help-seeking intention a positive correlation. Additionally, variables related to group membership or relationship satisfaction did not contribute to explaining the effect between the two variables under analysis. These results highlight the importance of taking in consideration the complex relationship between levels of self-reliance, help-seeking intention and suicidal ideation in clinical intervention with male individuals.
