Abstract(s)
The present dissertation aimed to analyse the relationship between work intensification and work-life balance, considering the mediating role of job satisfaction. This study was motivated by the growing challenge faced by employees in reconciling their professional and personal roles, in a context marked by increasingly intense work demands. Work intensification, defined as the increase in pace, workload, and task complexity, has been associated with negative effects on workers’ well-being, such as exhaustion and reduced quality of life. A quantitative, correlational study was conducted using an online questionnaire applied to a sample of 162 participants. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) work intensification negatively influences work-life balance, and (2) this relationship is mediated by job satisfaction. The results support hypothesis 1 and reveal a partial mediation effect of job satisfaction in hypothesis 2. It was found that work intensification is associated with lower levels of job satisfaction, which in turn negatively affects the balance between professional and personal life domains. The findings highlight the importance of developing organisational strategies that reduce workload and promote healthy work environments that foster employee satisfaction and overall quality of life. Among the study’s limitations, the small sample size stands out, as well as the fact that the study design does not allow for generalization of the results or inference of causal relationships.Future research should adopt longitudinal methodologies and include other mediating variables, such as organisational support or work engagement.
