Abstract(s)
This study aims to study the effect of exposure to traumatic events on symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Another objective is to determine how the coping strategies that they rely on can alter this relationship. The sample consists of 209 participants, all prison officers on active, exercising functions in several Portuguese prisons. The results obtained in this study revealed that only some of the traumatic events (physical aggression; assault with a gun; sexual assault; serious human suffering; serious injury, damage or death that caused another person; any other stressful event) have a significant effect on post-traumatic stress symptoms (intrusion, avoidance and overactivation). Coping strategies have a significant and positive association with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress of intrusion, avoidance and hyperactivation. There was no moderating effect of coping strategies on the relationship between traumatic events and post-traumatic stress symptoms.
