impacto no funcionamento familiar.
ABSTRACT------Unemployment is a consequence of the present socioeconomic situation, which consequently has an impact on family functioning. Given the lack of studies on the consequences of unemployment, we intend to develop this subject area and determine whether or not the fact that one of the members of the couple is employed and the other is unemployed interferes with family functioning and mental health, particularly with repercussions on stress, depression and suicidal ideation. The trail sample is made up of 44 couples living in a district in the Lisbon metropolitan area. In 23 of those couples the man is the one who is unemployed and in 21 of those couples it is the woman. The average age is 47.67. The participants were asked to answer the “Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale – FACES IV” (Olson, 2011), the “Perceived Stress Scale” (Ribeiro & Marques, 2009), the “Beck Depression Inventory “(Serra & Abreu, 1973) and the “Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire” (Ferreira & Castela, 1999). The results indicate that the functioning of the family system has positive effects on stress, depression and suicidal ideation. There is verified existence of a mediation model in which the effect of depression is a complete mediator of the relation between family functioning and suicidal ideation. There were no differences between men and women on job situation, family functioning and mental health.
