ABSTRACT: Introduction: Obesity and overweight are a public health issue with a global impact. In 2015, 32% and 33.2% of women and 25% and 45.5% of men living in Portugal were obese or overweight, respectively. These numbers have an impact on physical and mental health, making work in this area is crucial. The present study aimed to explore the strategies for initiating and maintaining successful weight loss, in a sample of Portuguese adults, using two taxonomies of behavioural change (BCT and OxFAB). Method: The study sample comprised 57 participants aged 20-66 years (M=41.96; SD=13.06). The study participants had a BMI between 21.64-29.70 kg/m2 (SD=2.32). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews that were recorded and subsequently transcribed and analysed. Results: Data analysis revealed that the most mentioned strategy by participants for initiating weight loss was social support from nutritionist (number of mentions [NM] = 135; number of participants [NP] = 42), while the most mentioned strategy for maintaining weight loss was reference to regular physical activity (NM = 116; NP = 38). Discussion: The results emphasise the perceived importance of physical activity and dietary behaviour change in achieving successful weight loss. The presence of professionals in the National Health Service who work on these components with people who are obese is urgent, considering the prevalence of obesity.
