T: Background: There is no evidence that supports the participation of individuals that experience Serious Mental Illness in the processes of review of the deintitutionalization in Portugal, specially regarding the advocacy of their human rights. Being this an important factor to their empowerment and recovery, here lies the necessity of developing investigations in the area. Goals: The main goal of this investigation is to study how the Survivors of Psychiatric Institutionalization lived their experience in Portugal and the support they hope to get from mental health services and communities in the future. Method: Five individuals with experience of mental illness and experience of one or more psychiatric institutionalizations participated in this investigation with ages comprehended between 36 and 59 years. A thematic reflexive analysis was done through semi-estructured interviews, resulting in the criation of Episodic Narratives as data. Results: From the selection and analysis of initial data derived five big themes: Institutionalization as an obstacle to empowerment, Institutionalization as torture, Access to Medical Information, Freedom and Autonomy as empowerment and the No-Recommendation of Institutionalization. Conclusion: Evidence was found regarding the importance of the access to medical information to these individuals and how this was restrained, the will of larger freedom of choice to decide support alternatives and the priority of the voluntarism associated with it. We add the necessity of contact with these narratives to accelerate the process of finishing with long-term institutionalizations and the further investment in mental health services especially independent residence.por
