Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT------This Thesis was developed to explore the relevance of the father figure in the field of infant caretaker interaction. The core of this research was to gain further knowledge about the influence of the father’s attachment representations (with his own parents) and the bonding (affective involvement to his infant) in the quality of the father / infant interaction. For an effective study it was paramount to use research instruments, regarding father’s attachment evaluation (R.A.Q. Reciprocal Attachment Questionnaire, West & Sheldon-Keller, 1994; Soares & others, 2006) and in relation to the father bonding with the infant (Bonding Questionnaire: Emotional Involvement from the Parents to the Baby; Figueiredo & others, 2005). Ultimately, it was undertaken a micro analysis on the father-baby interaction, backed by videotaping and for the use of two interaction frameworks: Greenspan and Lieberman (1989) and the Inter-subjective Interaction Framework, being the latter specifically created to endorse this paper output. The thesis, with its exploratory design, used two father-baby diades, following babies, on average, from the 4th until the 7th month. Results suggest that the father attachment (mental representation of his relationships with his parents) and the bonding (emotional involvement of the father with the baby) de facto influence the quality of the father-baby interaction, in what contingency and inter-subjectivity are concerned. Rolling out the construction of an inter-subjective framework made possible to dig deeper into emotional and subtle aspects of the interaction process, thus opening a window for further investigations on its development and future validation.
