Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Objetive: The aim was to explore the verbal and non-verbal characteristics of psychotherapists that patients perceive as most effective in the co-construction of therapeutic rationales using a qualitative approach. Method: The qualiatative method Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2014; Fernandes & Maia, 2001) was used to analyse 10 interviews conducted with patients who were either undergoing or had completed psychotherapy in the past year in a private practice setting. Results: Data analysis generated 19 categories related to persuasive behaviors of the psychotherapist during the co-construction of therapeutic rationales. These categories were organized into 5 domains representing unique and interrelated theoretical constructs: (1) Adoption of a variety of non-verbal bahaviors; (2) Promotion and strengthening of the therapeutic relationship; (3) Adaptation of verbal behaviors to the patient’s characteristics, based on the exploration and validation of the problema; (4) Creation of na environment for receiving/transmitting feedback and engaging in discussion with the patient; (5) Therapist behaviors that do not assist in the co-construction of the therapeutic rationale. Conclusion: The findings of this study allowed for a deeper understanding of the persuasive (verbal and non-verbal) behaviors that, from the patient’s perspective, are favorable and unfavorable for the effectiveness of the therapeutic process in the co-construction of therapeutic rationales. These results align with existing literature on the persuasive behaviors of therapists and their benefits for the efficacy of the therapeutic process.
