Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This literature review aims to assess the state of the psychology’s contributions in the comprehension of hostage taking, since this kind of incidents are still emerging internationally and in Portugal, whether in the political/religious terrorism sphere, as with delinquency in general and associated with mental health problems. It will then be presented the peculiarities of a hostage taking situation, the efforts of applying theoretical concepts from psychology to the interactions particular to this episodes and the information gathered in the literature about its characters, with a special emphasis to the typology of aggressor and the roles that a clinical psychologist may take on his intervention on this specific kind of incident. It’s noted that the clinical psychologist has been, in the last few decades, to be progressively included in the resolution of hostage taking situations, especially as a consulter. However, the gaps in the empiric investigation, the study of hostage takers and the understanding of this kind of criminal behavior are noticeable, and, if they are addressed, it will strengthen the relevance of the use of mental health professionals in the peaceful resolution of this sort of incidents.
