Abstract(s)
No
ABSTRACT: The present study is carried out in the Economic Psychology field, in the consumer behavior area, and aims to explore so important and current subjects such as intertemporal choice and behaviors related to saving and spending habits. The main goal of this research is to analyze in which way pain of paying and pleasure of saving (frugality) affects subjectsâ time preferences (impatience). Furthermore, it is also a purpose to evaluate subjectsâ behavior through hypothetical monetary choices and verify if the anomalies of DU Model are present in Scholten Scale (2010). This is a correlation study with three measures: impatience (time preference), pleasure of saving (frugality) and pain of paying. In order to answer the investigation problem, following hypothesis were formulated: spendthrifts should have lower levels of impatience than tightwads; frugal consumers should present lower levels of impatience when compared with less frugal consumers; and, finally, frugal consumers tend to be tighter and spendless with money in relation to less frugal consumers. Results suggest that there is no significant relation between intertemporal choice and pain of paying and also between intertemporal choice and pleasure of saving. On the other hand, it is possible to confirm, not only the existence of significant relationship between the pain of paying and the pleasure of saving, but also the evidence of the DU anomalies on Scholten Scale (2010), as expected.
