Abstract(s)
Autobiographical memory comprehends self-referent and affectively important information, and is fundamental to the construction of identity. Theories of autobiographical memory generally focus on the level of the individual and minimize the impact of culture on the structure and content of autobiographical memory. Recently new theories have emerged suggesting that the recall of autobiographical memories may be shaped by life scripts, that is culturally shared expectations as to the order and timing of life events in a prototypical life course. The aim of this study consisted in understanding the influence of mood states in the recall of life scripts and life story events, and the relation between those events. With this methodology, we fill the gaps of existing studies. 60 Psychology students in ISPA-IU (F=54; M=6) older than 17 (M=21; SD=5,487) participated in this study. Mood states for a positive and negative emotional valence were induced through music extracts; life events were collected through the Life Script Questionnaire and the Life Story Questionnaire; a set of clinical scales was used, specifically the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the New Multidimensional Depression Assessement Scale (NMDAS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). We did not find a congruence between the emotional valences of mood states and of life events, but we found a parcial overlap between life story and life script events. We also found a positive bias but not the reminiscence bump phenomenon. We discussed these findings taking into account the role of mood states and life scripts in the information processing.
